Free beach wheelchairs
Borrow a beach wheelchair, free.
Oak Island Parks & Recreation lends beach wheelchairs to residents and visitors. They were funded by grants and community donations.
- Call Parks & Rec at 910-278-5518 to reserve. Summer weeks fill up fast, so book well before your trip.
- Pick the right chair. There are 8 adult chairs and 1 child's chair, plus a floating wheelchair for going into the water.
- Keep it for 2 days. Loans run two days at a time, with no deposit.
- Head to a Mobi-Mat access (list below) for the smoothest route across the sand.
Heads-up: Mobi-Mat extensions are sometimes pulled up during king tides, storms and rough surf to protect them. The Town removed them at Keziah Street and SE 46th Street in October 2025, for example. Call ahead if a specific mat matters for your visit.

Handicap parking & ramps
These accesses have handicap parking or an accessible ramp but no Mobi-Mat. They're a good option with a beach wheelchair.
Good to know: Middleton Park (4610 E Dolphin Dr) sits across from the SE 46th Street Cabana access. It has restrooms, handicap parking and a large lot, so it's a comfortable base for a full beach day.
